Transforming your Child through a System Part 2

In part one of this series we talked about how you shouldn’t focus on strong skills.  I know that sounds strange, right?  Everywhere you go today, you are taught to find your child's strong skills and focus on them.  However, brain trainer's do quite the opposite.  We focus on the weaker skills since those are the ones that need to be improved.  We help your child overcome weak learning abilities.  We do not ignore the underlying issues.

We also talked about the first five steps of the Student Transformation System that will help your child transform. Just to review, step one talks about creating a program that is specific to your child’s cognitive assessment. Step two discusses how transformation becomes your student’s priority. Step three will help you with a baseline for your child’s present challenges. Step four helps you determine a baseline for your child from the teacher’s perspective and finally step five shows you how to integrate existing schoolwork.

In this article will discuss the remaining five steps to this 10 step system.

6. Reassess 30 hours into the program

When your child reaches the 30 hour mark, you need to reassess your system. You’ll monitor progress so you’re able to ensure your child is reaching levels of success. You’ll need to give your child an assessment and the results will guide you through the rest of the program. Exceptions will be made per student and ass the program progresses.

7. Examine your child’s inner game

If ever you were to step it up as a parent, now is the time.  This is where you understand how crucial positive thinking is to continued success. You need to help your child unmask negative thoughts that prevent you from progressing.  In a way, you need to lower your expectations – not lower your expectations relative to your child's potential, rather lower your expectations on how / when the potential is unlocked.

You see, as parents, we tend to take behaviors and accomplishments for granted.
We expect if we can do it or if we could do it when we were our child's age, that our child should be doing this behavior, too.  Actually, for success, your child will need your help to relearn, if you will, what you have been trying to get your child to accomplish, once the cognitive skill set has been strengthened.  Does that make sense?

It is like having a football player on a elementary team.  You are the coach and your player is not understanding all plays and keeps getting messed up on the field.  UGH you cringe when you send the player on the field.  You think, why can't this kid get the plays?  What is wrong with this kid?  This kid is holding up my team.

Well, it is now 3-6 months later, the same player has gotten much stronger their ability to listen, recall and visualize.  You, as the coach, notice the change.  As the great coach you are, the noticeable changes does not mean that you expect the player to be the MVP – far from it -  at least not immediately.  You have no doubt the player can be MVP, you just have to reteach the player what you have been teaching all along.

The difference now, 2nd time around coach, is that your player has the skills and ability to remember the plays and figure his/her way around your field!

It is the same with the classroom and at home.  You as mom and even the teacher, will do the same approach.  Help your child be able to accomplish your expectations and then teach your child (again) how to succeed and cross the finish line.

8. Post assess your child’s cognitive skills

A final assessment of your child’s cognitive skills will be done once the program has been completed. This will show you the progress your child made with his cognitive skills.  All brain training programs should provide you with a guarantee of at least 2 years growth in one cognitive skill if not more.

9. Implement the strengthened cognitive skills and new strategies

At this stage your child will start implementing the new strengths. It’ll give them a sense of ease with learning and reading. Homework will be easier and you’ll see homework time will be better and will take less time. You’ll also see your child organize his day and it’ll be less daunting.  Sometimes in this step, moms find having a tutor help with homework is better than mom standing over the child.

The tutor is there to guide now and now restate the material in a different learning style.  The tutor is helping your child with study skills and organization.  Something your child never mastered because they were never able to get through the homework sessions.

10. Reassess your child’s progress with the teacher

As the program is nearing the end, you will have been communicating with your child's teacher all along.  At this point, you will need to contact the teacher so he/she can acknowledge that progress has been made. You and the teacher will be able to see the "before" and "after" effect of brain training and the student transformation system.

Now you know what the 10 steps of Student Transformation Systemare to help your child.  So get moving to create a system that will help your child with their cognitive learning skills today. You need to help your child start the process and make sure he knows you are there every step of the way.

When your child knows you want to be successful and you are willing to take the time to help them make it happen, they will want to work hard to reach success. Encouragement is important and will help him develop better self esteem.
