So, I'm not sure this is BIG news for most dyslexics or teachers of children with Dyslexics. People with Dyslexia are usually very strong in logic/reasoning and even other skills beyond the phonological awareness. People with Dyslexia, including my daughter, can attest to the challenge with reading but not so much challenge in other areas. My daughter, of course, has other issues relative to her brain injury.
However, the standardized testing in our public schools still uses this (IQ discrepancy) approach to determine if a child can get help from the school. The school will come back and state the child has an IQ of above average so no intervention is justified. This article is a 10 year study of dyslexics studying IQ and Reading ability. The dyslexics reading ability remained low while IQ was always high over the years.
This article, from Science Daily, shows us enough proof, in my opinion, that Dept. of Ed needs to rework their discrepancy policy between IQ and Achievement to determine whether or not Dyslexia exists, can be supported in school, that the student in question IS NOT LAZY and that sometimes your best intentions need a little tweaking here and there!
